Druidale Motor Club – The History

The Volkswagen Owners Club was formed in 1962 and ran events through to the early seventies.  At this time due to a decline in numbers it was decided to widen the scope of the club, to encourage all types of vehicles to take part in the events.  The Druidale Motor Club was formed on 14th July 1972 at a meeting in The Good Companions Hotel on Douglas Promenade.

The Committee at that time was; Selwyn Pye (former President of Druidale MC), Harold Cannon (former vice President of Druidale MC), Bert Corkill (Ian Corkill's Father), John Brown (still a regular steward on events), Ailsa Killey, Billy and Marie Boak, Brian Collister, Willy Clucas (AKA ‘The Yak’) and Nigel Carine.

The ‘new’ club was successful and ran 3 night rallies, auto crosses at Oatlands and Turkyland's, production Car Trials at Turkyland, Bradda and Cronk ny Arrey Laa as well as Treasure Hunts and Various Social Occasions. This Team worked hard and remained virtually unchanged until 1982-83 when they too began to run out of steam. Then it was either pull the plug or let new blood take the reins.

At a meeting in the Falcon Hotel on the Prom (now Quid’s Inn) it was agreed that, that was it, unless a new team could be put in place. At that time we needed two car clubs on the Island to be able to have ‘Restricted Rallies’ which by competing and finishing them competitors could gain the necessary signatures to upgrade their competition licenses to National and International level to be able to compete in the May or September (as it was then) Rallies.

Realising this could not be allowed to happen Glenn Leece decided to recruit a new committee which included Pat Bettridge, Ian Corkill, Norman Quayle, Martyn Wasley, John and Shelia Webster, who both remained from the previous Committee with Shelia continuing as Secretary, and Selwyn Pye and Harold Cannon who also remained in their roles as Chairman and Treasurer respectively.

The Club continued well and we are now fortunate to have an influx of younger members to the club and our present committee has benefitted from those who have joined us.

As a side note, a former member of the aforementioned VW club was Roy Kennaugh who is the Grandfather of Cycling Star Peter Kennaugh who won a Gold Medal at the 2012 London Olympics!
